The immediate past Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, has launched a scathing attack on the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing the ruling party of allegedly abandoning governance in favour of political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Malami made these comments during a National Political Consultative Group (North) meeting in Abuja on Sunday.
In his keynote address at the meeting, Malami criticised the APC for its recent national summit held on May 22, where the Progressive Governors Forum endorsed President Bola Tinubu as the party’s sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
“Just a few days ago, the ruling party held its national summit and instead of addressing the serious issues of insecurity, economic hardship, and rising poverty, it chose to focus on politics, endorsing President Bola Tinubu as the sole candidate for the 2027 election that is still two years away,” Malami stated.
Malami, who served as AGF under former President Muhammadu Buhari, highlighted the Tinubu administration’s policies, such as the abrupt removal of fuel subsidies and poor border management, as key factors exacerbating economic hardship, particularly in northern Nigeria.
“Reckless decisions by the Tinubu administration have crippled agriculture, which was the backbone of the north,” he added.
The New Diplomat reports that Malami said this at the meeting attended by prominent opposition figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi.
The New Diplomat had also reported that the meeting was part of a broader effort to unite northern political leaders and potentially form a coalition against Tinubu in 2027.
