Liz Truss on Thursday announced her decision to resign as Britain’s Prime Minister.
The announcement came just a month and a half after taking office. The resignation followed a failed tax-cutting budget that rocked financial markets, which led to a revolt within her own Conservative Party.
Truss said in a statement she resigned after she discovered she cannot deliver the mandate on which she was elected by the Conservative Party.
“We set out a vision for a low-tax, high-growth economy that would take advantage of Brexit.
“I recognize though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to announce that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party,” the statement reads.
It would be recalled that Truss was appointed prime minister on Sept. 6, just two days before Queen Elizabeth II passed away.
Truss was elected into office following the resignation of Boris Johnson on July 7.
