With less than 24 hours to the presidential election, a member of the House of Representatives, Honourable Chinyere Igwe was reportedly arrested on Friday morning with over five hundred and fifty thousand United State dollars ($5500,000.00) in his possession in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Upon interrogation, the Lawmaker, who also doubles as one of the coordinators to the campaign of presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, claimed that the said amount of money in US dollars was handed over to him by his principal.

Hon. Igwe disclosed that the money was meant to ensure electoral victory for the PDP presidential candidate on Saturday, tomorrow’s elections.

According to him, the money would be disbursed to each PDP coordinator to buy Votes in each local area in Rivers State.

The Lawmaker was also apprehended with a list that detailed how the money would be shared in Nigerian currency, the naira to the different councils, the expected beneficiaries of the PDP political instrument.

This ugly incident has proved that security operatives deployed to keep the peace during this election are truly working.

It be recalled that both President Muhammadu Buhari and the independent National Electoral Commission, INEC have warned in separate fora against vote buying and the imminent consequences of such action.
