  • Ethiopian, Meseret Dinke Wins Female Category

Kenya’s Emmanuel Naibei, has emerged as the new champion of the 2021 edition of the World Athletics Silver Label Race, returning a time of 2 hrs, 14 mins.

Also, Meseret Dinke, an Ethiopian athlete, won the female category at the marathon.

Dinke was also winner of the 2019 edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, but was dethroned by the Kenyan Sharon Cherop in 2020.

Naibei has now claimed the top prize of $30,000 by recording the second-fastest time ever in the history of the Lagos Marathon.

According to the official exchange rate of Saturday, the prize might be equivalent to N11m.

Similarly, Dinke of the female category, also claimed the top prize of $30,000 (N11m)

In addition, Daresa Geleta of Ethiopia took second place in the men category, while Demiso Legese also from Ethiopia took third place.

While, the second place in women category was won by Celestine Chepchirchir of Kenya, and Desta Muluneh of Ethiopia took third place.

The Kenyans continued their fine record in the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon. This is the fourth time a Kenyan is emerging as the winner of the men’s category of Lagos City Marathon.

Plateau-born, Istifanus Peter Mahan was the first Nigerian to cross the finish line.

The race which is championed by Access Bank started in the early hours of Saturday at the National Stadium, Surulere, and ended at the Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island, adding up to a 42-kilometer stretch.

The race was flagged off by the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare.

Only 300 athletes participated in the 2021 edition due to the Covid-19 pandemic, while joined the competition virtually.
