Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Labour Party (LP) National Executive Committee (NEC) has elected Senator Nenadi Usman as its Interim National Chairperson during a high-profile meeting in Abuja.

The decision, announced on Friday, also saw Senator Darlington Nwokocha appointed as Interim National Secretary, solidifying the party’s interim leadership team.

The NEC meeting, attended by key stakeholders including Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, his deputy Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Comrade Joe Ajaero focused on repositioning the LP for future electoral success.

The interim working committee, led by Usman, is tasked with overseeing party activities until a national convention elects a new NEC.

Senator Usman, a former Minister of Finance and respected grassroots politician, brings a wealth of experience to the role.

Her leadership is expected to steer the LP through a critical phase, with plans to conduct ward, local government, state, and zonal congresses to strengthen the party’s grassroots presence.

The NEC also approved the establishment of strategic committees, including one for nationwide membership revalidation, to update the party’s register and enhance its political footing.

The appointment follows a tumultuous period for the LP, marked by a leadership dispute with former National Chairman Julius Abure.
