The Kogi State Government has confirmed the rescue of six additional kidnapped students from the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, Kogi.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 14, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, noted that the latest rescues bring the number of freed students from captivity to 20, following the initial rescue of 14 on Sunday, May 12.

While four students are still missing, the commissioner said that some of the kidnappers escaped with severe injuries during a gun duel with security agents.

“Our data shows that there are four students yet to be found. Nine students had been rescued first, while five others were found the following morning,” he said.

“The families of the six students just rescued have confirmed that the students have arrived home.”

The New Diplomat reports that tragedy struck in the late hours of last Thursday, May 9, when some armed men, suspected to be bandits, stormed the institution located in Osara, Okene area of Kogi State and abducted an unspecified number of students.

It was gathered that the university was attacked when the students were in classes preparing for their examinations.

The armed men were said to have entered the university premises through a nearby bush, and went straight into about three lecture halls where they wreaked havoc.

Earlier on Friday, May 10, the commissioner stated that nine students were missing.
