Following the backlash from Nigerians over the decision of President Bola Tinubu to remove oil subsidy, the immediate past Minister of State for Employment, Festus Keyamo, SAN, has narrated how the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, supported Peter Obi’s presidential ambition over his decision to remove fuel subsidy if elected.

The Human Rights Lawyer in his reaction to NLC National President, Joe Ajaero’s interview on Channels Television, Wednesday morning over the planned meeting with the Federal Government on fuel subsidy removal, said all the major presidential candidates in the 2023 election had spoke of the need to remove the oil subsidy.

Keyamo in a tweet on the microblogging platform Twitter tagged a video of Peter Obi’s interview, where he discussed the need to remove oil subsidy.

“All the major parties and candidates agreed that fuel subsidy would go immediately.

“The Nigeria Labour Congress fully endorsed the candidature of Peter Obi who supported the removal of subsidy.

“They are now saying they told him they were not in support of that. When? On what occasion? Where is the communique? Did NLC make that communique public?

“However, it was even outlawed before the elections,” he said.

It would be recalled that Ajaero during the interview with Channels Television maintained that the position of Labour had been clear that even if President Bola Tinubu has good intentions, alternatives must be provided.

his words, “The pronouncement by Mr President is as good as law and if in the process we make a law that is not practicable, the same people that made the law can look at it,” Ajaero said while calling for a review of the President’s pronouncement.

“Does it bring pleasure to us to say subsidy is gone and people start suffering? Is it not part of leadership for us to look at how the suffering of the people can be reduced?” he asked.
