Governor Abbas Yusuf of Kano State has reaffirmed his loyalty to Rabiu Kwankwaso, one of his predecessors in office.
Yusuf maintained that his political move is at the behest of Kwankwaso.
The governor disclosed this while addressing 484 local government councillors, from the 44 LGAs, at the Kano government house.
The governor pledged to follow Kwankwaso’s political lead, stating that “wherever he goes politically, his supporters will follow”.
The governor also reiterated the significance of local government administrations by telling the councillors to act as a link between government and the grassroots.
He urged them to identify urgent community needs demanding swift intervention.
“You are the eyes and ears of government at the grassroots. Go back to your wards, listen to the people, and present their most urgent needs. Once you do that, we will act,” Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor’s spokesperson, quoted his principal as saying in a statement.
The Kano governor said the state has earmarked nearly N5 billion for ward-level projects to address classrooms, drainage, and other pressing community infrastructure issues.
Yusuf also harped on the importance of sincerity, transparency, and dedication to ensure funds are used for projects with direct impact on the people.
The governor’s veiled remarks were made hours after the defection of Kwankwaso’s confidant and ally, Yunusa Adamu Dangwani, in Kano.
Dangwani’s move comes amid growing political realignments in Kano, a key battleground state in Nigerian politics.
Recall that days ago, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, followed his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
A move which led to the collapse of the PDP structure in Delta State which has been a stronghold of the opposition party since Nigeria returned to civilian rule in 1999.
Kwankwaso was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections.
He is also regarded as national leader of the NNPP.
