Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state has cancelled plans to hold the Lagos peace walk scheduled for December 2021.

The governor said he is constrained to stand down the scheduled peace walk over the recent outbreak of Omicron in Nigeria.

He explained that he will not endanger the life of any Lagosian in his search for peace.

The Governor had in his address on November 30, 2021, called for the staging of a peace walk aimed at finding solace over the events of October 20, 2020, during the #EndSARS protest. Sanwo-olu invited several celebrities, lawyers, activists, among others to join him in the search for peace.

However, the plan has now been called off due to Omicron concerns, according to a press statement issued on Thursday.

The statement reads, “Between Tuesday 30, November 2021 that I made my address and now, we have seen a significant rise in cases associated with the Omicron variant of this pandemic.

“Given this development, I am constrained to stand down all preparations for the Walk for Peace. I will not endanger the life of any Lagosian in my sincere search for peace. I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of support the initiative received from far and near. The deluge of support is, however, indicative of one thing: our people know the strategic place of peace to our quest for development.”
