The national power grid has again collapsed for the third time in 2025, leaving millions of households, businesses, and critical infrastructure in total blackout across the country.
The New Diplomat reports that the incident, which struck around 12:25 p.m. on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, has reignited widespread frustration over what many described as the country’s unreliable electricity supply.
The collapse caused a dramatic drop in power generation, plummeting from over 2,917.83 (MW) to 1.5 (MW) between 12 pm on Wednesday.
Shortly after the collapse, the Nigeria National Grid, an X handle that provides updates on Electric power distribution announced that “System restoration is in progress.”
This latest failure marks the third national grid collapse in 2025, following disturbances in January and March that also plunged the country into widespread blackouts.
Recall that some experts attribute the collapses to a combination of aging infrastructure, over 50 years old in parts, vandalism of transmission lines, and insufficient investment in upgrades.
