Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Mbah has been declared winner of the Enugu Governorship election.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mbah garnered 160,895 votes to defeat his neck-to-neck rival, Chijioke Edeoga of the Labour Party who polled 157,552 votes. Candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) Frank Nweke Jnr. had 17,983 votes to come a distant third.

While making a return in the election, late Wednesday, the Collation Officer and Vice Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Prof Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe said the total number of rejected votes was 9,088 as the lead margin was just 3,343 in a very close election result.

Voters in the state have had to wait for about five days for a winner to be announced in the election since Saturday when ballots were cast.

Prof. Iwe had earlier hinted that the state collation centre conferred with the INEC Headquarters in Abuja to resolve dispute which delayed the announcement of poll results.
