The #EndSARS protest resonated with hundreds of young people in Kano, Monday, after many days of inaction in the state, even as the nationwide protest enters its day 12.
Unlike many states in the country, the protest against police brutality in Nigeria has not gathered mass effect in some states up north. However, The New Diplomat reliably gathered that the recent interest and fire were ignited by the alleged killing of a 17-year-old boy, named Dahiru Saifullahi by the police.
The victim was reported to have been arrested at his home on Sunday evening by the police.
Efforts by his family and community members to have him released proved abortive. They had pleaded with the police, saying the boy had never been linked to criminal activities in the past.
However, protest broke out in Kano after the police called his family, asking them to come and carry his corpse on Monday morning after allegedly torturing him death. The boy was reported to have died in police custody on Sunday night.
Saifullahi’s death angered many Kano residents, forcing protesters to hit major streets in the Sabon Gari area of the Kano metropolis.
Also, the angry protesters stormed France, Burma, Sarkin Yaki areas of the city including the Airport road, demanding government’s action against police brutality in the country.
The Kano Police Command spokesman, DSP Abdullahi Haruna, said “the police has commenced investigations into the incident.” He said the command will speak on the incident after its investigation.
