Thursday was quite eventful for members of the Edo state House of Assembly and their backers as another speaker emerged from the majority members of the House opposed to Governor Godwin Obaseki’s re-election.

The New Diplomat earlier reported that Obaseki ordered a renovation of the Assembly complex to stop the lawmakers from accessing the Assembly complex after the police had laid siege to it early Thursday.the new speaker, majority members

But 17 members of the assembly in clear majority, including 14 blocked from the Assembly since last year by Governor Obaseki, elected a new speaker named Victor Edoror, Thursday.

Following the storming of the Assembly by Obaseki and supporters, the lawmakers later reconvened elsewhere and inaugurated Edoror as the new Speaker after a motion for the impeachment of Frank Okiye, installed by Governor Obaseki was moved.

It was also gathered that the original 14 majority members now have with them three other members, from the 10 lawmakers initially loyal to Obaseki.

Also, 12 of the 14 members who were not sworn in last year took their self-styled oaths of office.

Early Thursday, Minority Speaker of Edo Assembly, Okiye, had raised an alarm over a planned hijack of the Assembly complex.

Following their inaugural sitting at an undisclosed location, Edoror announced that plenary will resume on Friday, 7th August 2020.
