No fewer than 100 residential buildings including school, churches were reportedly destroyed, Saturday morning as explosion rocked Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The New Diplomat gathered the explosion occurred around 1.00am while a truck was conveying explosives to a quarry located at an Akure suburb.

The explosion has rattled the Akure–Owo road making it unpliable for vehicles at the moment. Vehicles are now being forced to take alternative routes.

The number of fatalities has not been confirmed yet as at the time of this report but the Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, in a tweet said he had been debriefed and would visit the scene of the incident.

“I’ve been briefed by security agencies in the state concerning the loud blast that was heard in Akure. I will be at the scene to assess on the advise of heads of our security agencies. I ask that all citizens remain calm as we ascertain details of the incidence.”
