Some suspected political thugs reportedly attacked Senator Danjuma Goje in Gombe on Friday.
Five persons were killed during the attack, according to media reports.
It was gathered that the thugs attacked Goje, who is also a former governor of Gombe state while he was about to enter the state capital.
The media aide to the Senator, Ms. Lilian Nworie, who spoke with journalists said his principal left Abuja for Gombe to attend a personal engagement in the state. On arriving the state, Nworie said some thugs attacked his principal’s convoy.
The media aide also accused some police operatives of aiding the thugs, saying that they stood and watch as Goje was attacked.
The attack is coming amidst the acrimonious relationship between Goje and sitting governor of Gombe, Governor Inuwa Yahaya.
Meanwhile, the Gombe state Commissioner of Information, Julius Ishaya Lepes, in his account of the incident accused Goje of storming the state with thugs ‘armed to their teeth.’
According to the Commissioner, it was the former governor that attempted to cause havoc in the state before the situation was put to rest by security operatives.
This was contained in a statement issued on Friday.
The statement reads: “The former Governor, in his characteristic manner, decided to mobilise thugs from various LGAs armed to their teeth under the pretext of accompanying him from the airport into the State capital for reasons best known to him.
“Recall that during the last Eid el-Kabir Sallah celebration, the same person sponsored some thugs that threw caution into the wind and went on a rampage, leading to loss of 2 lives. Also just last week at Deba in Yamaltu Deba LGA the same scenario played out at the instance of the Senator.
“It is sad that Goje has not left his old ways and is bent on bringing back his brainchild (Kalare) to unleash mayhem and bug the peaceful atmosphere of Gombe State.”
