…Says He Is Yet To Make A Decision To Run
Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele has rejected the Nomination And Expression Of Interest Form bought for him by support groups, saying he is yet to decide on whether he will join the race.
Recall that about three groups; the Rice Farmers Association, Emefiele Support Group, and Friends of Godwin had yesterday purchased the N100m form for Emefiele to contest the presidential race on the platform of the ruling All-Progressives Congress (APC).
Reacting to this amid the rising backlash that greeted the development, the CBN governor said though he remains humbled by the calls from various quarters, he cannot honour the request as he has not made any decision.
Emefiele, who said this in a series of tweets on Saturday, also said should he make a decision to contest for the 2023 presidency, he would be doing so with his “hard-earned savings” and not donations.
The tweets read, “I am humbled by the growing interest of those asking that I run for the Office of President in the 2023 general elections: I have not come to that decision.
“I note and salute the sacrifices of those farmers and patriots going as far as raising personal funds and offering me Presidential Nomination Forms: I thank them most profusely.
“However, Should I answer their calls and decide to seek presidential nomination, I will use my own hard-earned savings from over 35 years of banking leadership to buy my own Nomination Forms, without proxies in an open and transparent manner in full compliance with the laws and Constitution of The Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“And should I not run for elected office, I will continue to serve and sacrifice for the good people of Nigeria under the able leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari. This is a serious decision that requires God’s Divine intervention: in the next few days The Almighty will so direct.”
On Friday, a coalition comprising Rice Farmers Association, Emefiele Support Group, and Friends of Godwin, approached the ruling APC and obtained the N100m nomination and expression of interest forms for the CBN Governor.
The CBN governor had since come under heavy criticism, with many demanding his resignation from his position as the head of the country’s apex bank.
The New Diplomat had reported that Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State, among other Nigerians, has described the development as shocking
