Several communities in Enugu State, particularly the Nsukka axis of the state have been bubbling in jubilation as Mrs Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu has reportedly regained her freedom after serving jail term in the United Kingdom (UK).

Reports emerging on Wednesday revealed that Beatrice has reportedly left the UK and she is back in Nigeria.

A report by DAILY POST on Wednesday said Beatrice arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday
However, Beatrice is yet to officially issue a statement confirming her release as of press time.

It would be recalled that Ekweremadu, along with his wife, Beatrice and a medical doctor named Obinna Obeta, were convicted in the UK of orchestrating an organ harvesting plot.

Recall that on March 23, 2023, Ekweremadu, his wife, and Dr. Obeta were found guilty of conspiring to exploit a 21-year-old man from Lagos for his kidney under the guise of bringing him to the UK for a better life.

They were charged under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act for arranging the travel of another person with the intention of exploitation, specifically for organ harvesting.

It would also be recalled that Ekweremadu and his wife were arrested on June 21, 2022, upon arrival at Heathrow Airport. The trial took place at the Old Bailey, London’s Central Criminal Court, where it was revealed that the victim was not fully aware of or consenting to the organ donation, as initially presented.

On May 5, 2023, Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months in prison, his wife Beatrice received four years and six months, while Dr. Obeta was sentenced to ten years, respectively.
