Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday commended the people of Sierra Leone for the successful conduct of the 2018 Presidential elections.  He also congratulates the candidate of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Brig. Julius Maada Bio (Rtd) who was declared a winner and sworn in as Sierra Leone’s new President.

Jonathan in a personal statement also commend the immediate past president, Ernest Bai Koroma and other presidential candidates, including the candidate of the All People’s Congress (APC), Mr. Samura Kamara, for supporting the processes of credible elections and allowing a peaceful power transfer from the ruling party to the opposition to take place.

“I commend the good people of Sierra Leone for the successful conduct of the 2018 Presidential elections.

“I congratulate the candidate of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Brig. Julius Maada Bio (Rtd) who was last night declared winner and has just been sworn in as Sierra Leone’s new President.

“I also commend the immediate past president, Ernest Bai Koroma and other presidential candidates, including the candidate of the All People’s Congress (APC), Mr. Samura Kamara, for supporting the processes of credible elections and allowing a peaceful power transfer from the ruling party to the opposition, to take place” Jonathan said.

The ex Nigerian President added that President Bio’s victory and subsequent peaceful transfer of power show that democracy is surely being consolidated in the sub-region. “I am delighted to have witnessed the process, having led the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA) Observation Mission to Sierra Leone. I also thank the people of Sierra Leone for trusting us as leaders of different observer missions to have offered us a ringside view of the processes that gave birth to this beautiful outcome” Jonathan added.
