The Rivers command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), says it is collaborating with sister security agencies to beef up security in custodial centres across the state.

Mr Alex Oditah, the state NCoS Comptroller, stated this in a statement in Port Harcourt on Thursday by the command spokesperson, DSC Juliet Ofoni.

Oditah, who visited the state Comptroller of Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) Mr D. Oni and the state Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mr Bature Aliyu, said the move was to prevent jailbreaks in the state.

“The visits are sequel to the directive from the Comptroller General of Corrections, Mr Haliru Nababa to collaborate with sister security agencies to beef up security around custodial centres in the state.

“This is in view of the incessant attacks on custodial centres in the country,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the partnership would help keep the correctional facilities safe and prevent future attacks from external aggressors.

Speaking, Oni as assured of full cooperation and support of the NIS.

On his part, Aliyu said the collaboration would go a long way to discourage attacks on custodial centres.

He pledged the support of NSCDC towards protecting correctional facilities in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that hoodlums had on Jan. 4 attacked and freed inmates at the Police Divisional Headquarters in Okirika, Rivers, thus raising concerns on the safety of custodial centres in the state. (NAN)
