Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof Chukwuma Soludo, has narrated how he was attacked by gunmen in his hometown, Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The former CBN boss was attacked in the late hours of Wednesday while delivering a lecture to youths in his community, at a Civic center in Isuofia.

However, Soludo, escaped that attack without being hurt.

Soludo, who spoke on Thursday during an interview session with Channels TV, disclosed that he was about rounding up his speech at the town Hall in Isuofia, when he started hearing gunshots. He said he initially thought the gunshots were from police operatives stationed outside the hall, however, he fled the scene immediately he noticed the town hall had come under attack.

He also noted that it was after “10 or 15 minutes of continuous gun battles going back and forth of stopping, starting again”, before he summoned courage to go back to the scene, adding he saw his three security sides “lying in the pool of their blood.”

He commiserated with the families of the deceased, praying that God will give them the fortitude to bear the loss.

Soludo also took the opportunity to appeal to the abductors of the Anambra Commissioner for Public Utilities, Mr. Emeka Ezenwanne to release him.

In his words, “When it was all over, it took several minutes, 10 or 15 minutes of continuous gun battles going back and forth of stopping, starting again. By the time we all came back, we saw three bodies lying in the pool of their blood. They were the three policemen. May God grant their soul eternal rest. At first I thought, maybe the policemen were shooting in the air. Until I began to hear people screaming and all of that and everybody just scampered for safety. Just as I was about to wrap up the town hall meeting and said finally for them now to open up for comments and answers, there were gunshots.”

Earlier, Anambra State Commissioner for Police (CP) confirmed the incident.

The CP said three policemen were killed during the attack and the state Commissioner for Public Utilities, Ezenwanne, was also abducted.

The CP on Thursday also confirmed the arrest of four persons allegedly linked to the attack on the former CBN Governor.
