The Ogun State government, on Saturday said it is collaborating with security stakeholders to include security studies and intelligence gathering in the state’s school curriculum.

Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, revealed this during a meeting with Ahmed Abodunrin, Ogun state Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), in Abeokuta.

According to the commissioner, security studies is necessary to inculcate the habit of security consciousness in students, given the recent attacks on schools across the country.

The commissioner also stressed the need for government to inculcate good values and uprightness in students, which will prevent them from becoming criminals in the future.

Arigbabu also assured that  Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun state is committed to making sure that teachers and students are safe and well protected.

In his words, “Ogun is doing its best to ensure maximum security in our schools, hence this continuous meeting with relevant stakeholders and security agencies on different ways to curb insecurity and drive unscrupulous elements away from our schools. We have met with the commissioner of police and constituted a committee on security in schools. Today’s meeting with NSCDC Commandant will enhance our capacity to identify insecurity in schools and fashion out ways of ending it.”

Responding, Abodunrin said the security studies is a welcomed idea, adding that it will broaden the horizon of the younger generation on security consciousness, and also empower them to protect themselves and others.

He also noted that the Ogun state chapter of NSCDC, has organised a training programme on intelligence gathering and security studies for teachers in schools across the state.
