The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has officially responded to a letter of request filed by human rights activist and Lagos-based Lawyer, Mr Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN).

This as the Police Chief ordered all police top brass across the federation to protect intending participants of the planned nationwide protest slated for August 1 to 10, 2024.

Egbetokun made this known in a responding letter issued by his Principal Staff Officer, CP Johnson Adenola and addressed to Adegboruwa.

The New Diplomat reports that Adegboruwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), on July 26, 2024, wrote to the IGP, requesting police coverage for protesters in Abuja and other states in Nigeria.

The senior lawyer said he was writing as a solicitor to the Take It Back Movement.
In his response, Egbetokun requested to have a meeting with Adegboruwa in Abuja on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.

He explained that the meeting is “to deliberate further” on his request.

The letter reads in part: “I am to inform you that the Inspector General of Police has directed the Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (Operations and Intelligence), the Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) in charge of Zonal Police Headquarters and the Commissioners of Police (CPs) in charge of State Commands across the country to attend to your request.

“I am to also inform you that the Inspector General of Police wishes to have a meeting with you at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Tuesday, 30th July 2024, to deliberate further on your request.”

The New Diplomat reports that the nationwide protest has been gaining momentum on social media.

Several Nigerians had expressed their willingness to protest against the rising cost of living.
