The golfing experience in West Africa and indeed Nigeria is getting more intriguing and exciting at the lurch green 18-hole Ibom Icon Hotel golf course in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The Ibom golf club is offering another delicious item on its menu, ‘The Governor’s Cup’ tournament.

According to the Club Captain, Hon. Usenobong Akpabio, the golf tournament is set for 24-26th September 2021 and coincides with the Akwa Ibom state anniversary.

“The Governor’s Cup would be used to mark the anniversary of Akwa Ibom State. We name it the Governor’s Cup but want it to outlive the present governor like when you hear the President’s Cup in America. We’re expecting close to 200 golfers and we speak about 100 people who are already signed up. We’ll close it once it’s 200.”

The Governor’s Cup is said to attract golfers across the globe. This also has made the five stars Ibom Icon Hotel to be booked almost to capacity in August 2021.

The uniqueness of the Ibom golf course has attracted many golfers to Uyo during weekends. Golfers from Abuja and Lagos were seen taking the par challenge and enjoying the best facility in ‘West Africa’ last weekend.

Also, the golfers including immediate past Captain of Ikoyi Golf Club, Mr Uwem Udoh, and former Kogi State governor, gathered to celebrate the return of the Ibom Golf Club President, Obong Bassey Inuaenyen (OBI). OBI recently returned from a successful medical trip to the USA.

The much-adored club President was decorated with new Golfers paraphernalia including Shirts, cap among others as commemorative and to boost his playing murals.

Also present at the event were the Female Captain, Ndifreke Okochio, Hon. Otobong Bob, and Hon. Asuquo Nana Udo, both lawmakers in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly. The former President of Uyo Club, Engr. Nsima Ekanem as well as ace golfer and cricketer, Mr Edu Ukpong.

The club Captain, Usenobong Akpabio and about 60 members present all paid tributes to the club’s highly respected and hilarious President OBI. The president expressed pleasure at the captain’s leadership, honour and love by all members. The former governorship candidate, Inuaenyen was pleased by the continuous use of the golf facility to prevent the deterioration of the prestigious golf course.

Hon. Akpabio earlier expressed delight at the increasing rate of members of the club as well as full utilisation of the envied Ibom golf course.

The club’s end of the year signature event “All White” golf tournament comes up in December.
