Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi has revealed that the state would have recorded more than 6,000 COVID 19 cases instead of the 1491 positive cases if not for the preventive measures the state had put in place.

Prof Abayomi made this known at a press briefing held at the Lagos state secretariat on Friday.

“The combination of Lagos state strategies and perhaps some resilience of our communities are responsible for the low index of cases and fatalities that we are seeing in Lagos state,” he said.COVID 19 Figures

He, however, warned that based on the trajectory of the novel coronavirus, the state’s COVID 19 cases may top 120, 000 infections by July 2020.

“Just a month ago, on April 7 we saw 10 cases per day, two weeks later it was 32, then 70 cases. We are now seeing above 100 cases per day. This shows our graph is moving in a gentle incline upwards.

We definitely have not reached the peak of our outbreak, we suspect that the peak will happen sometime in July or August and so we are preparing for the oncoming, we are increasing our capacity and strategies to deal with this situation,” Abayomi said.

In preparation for the peak period, the commissioner said the state is decentralizing some of the sample collection centres to increase efficiency in combating coronavirus. He also noted that Hydroxychloroquine trials are likely to start in a week’s time.

Recall that on Thursday COVID-19 cases in Lagos surged to 183, a record for the state as Nigeria witnessed its highest number of infections in a day.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control confirmed a total of 381 new cases for the day.

It was the largest number of cases to be confirmed in a day since the first case of COVID-19 was reported in the country on February 27, 2020.
