The 2023 general elections have continued to spring surprises as some big political gladiators in the country have lost their respective bids.

The New Diplomat reports that Gov. Ben Ayade of Cross Rivers has lost his Senatorial bid.

The governor was defeated by the incumbent senator representing Cross River North, Sen. Jarigbe Agom-Jarigbe.

Ayade who was in the Senate between 2011 and 2015, lost the Senatorial election conducted on Saturday with 56,595 votes against Agom-Jarigbe’s of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 76,145 votes.

The returning officer, Dr Emmanuel Emanghe, who spoke on behalf of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the result for the polls around 3:05 a.m. on Monday.

Similarly, Sen. Tanko Al-Makura (APC-Nasarawa South) has lost his re-election bid to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mohammed Onawo.

Declaring the result on Monday in Lafia, Prof. Ahmed Ashiku, the Returning Officer, said Onawo got 93,064 votes to defeat Al-Makura who polled 76,813 votes.

Ashiku declared that Onawo having satisfied the requirement of the law and scored the highest number of votes was returned elected.

Also, the incumbent Senator for Ekiti South Senatorial District and former Senate Minority Leader, Biodun Olujimi, has lost her seat to the candidate of the APC Yemi Adaramodu.

The APC candidate polled 63,189 as against Olujimi of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who scored 36,191.

Also, INEC has declared Chief Okechukwu Ezea of Labour Party (LP), winner of Saturday’s general election for the Enugu North Senatorial District.

The Returning officer, Prof Chukuemeka Ubaka, announced the results early Monday morning at Nsukka INEC office.

Ubaka said Ezea scored a total of 104,492 votes to defeat his closest rival, Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, who scored 46,948.

He said that the APC candidate, Mr. Simon Eze came third with 6,816 votes.

“Based on the power given to me as the returning officer, I hereby declare Ezea as the winner,” Ubaka said.

In Osun, Ajagunla Olubiyi, PDP senatorial candidate for Osun Central polled 134, 229 votes to defeat Senate’s spokesperson, Ajibola Bashiru of the APC who polled 117, 609 votes as PDP swept Senatorial and House of Representatives positions in Osun, including the presidential votes.

In Nasarawa, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has won the senatoral zone of the ruling APC National Chairman to floor Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

APC National Chairman hails from the zone and was representing the area until his election as the party’s leader.  The APC candidate, Shehu Tukur, was not listed by INEC to contest for a seat in the red chambers due to a legal tussle. The SDP candidate, Ahmed Wadada, polled 96,488 votes while APC got 47,717 votes, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) 46,820 and the Labour Party (LP) 33,228.

However, in Ogun, former Governor Gbenga Daniel won the Ogun East Senatorial seat for the APC; also Senator Solomon Olamilekan (aka Yayi) who switched from Lagos West to Ogun West has won the Senatorial seat for APC.
