Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich, has announced that he is stepping down at the club following alleged links with President Vladimir Putin in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
A statement issued by Abramovich on the club’s website, chelseafc.com, 26th February, 2022, stated that he has taken decisions that suits the club’s best interest to handover to the trustees of Chelsea’s charitable foundation.
His words: “I have always taken decisions with the club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.
“I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans.”
Recall UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, awkwardly walked out of the House of Commons as he was being asked to correct the record over claims about the Russian billionaire.
Boris had told MPs the Chelsea owner was ‘already facing sanctions’ as he discussed the financial penalties being imposed on Russia.
