From Ameachi Prosper (The New Diplomat’s Delta & Edo States Correspondent)

The Director-General, Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency, Hon. Mrs Joan Mrakpor, has allegedly beaten up a 68-year-old grandmother, Mrs Adaeke Odiaka, to a state of comma in Ubulu-Uku, Aniocha South LGA of the state.

There are conflicting accounts as to how it all started. According to one account, Mrakpor, in company of her younger brother, Jude Ugbah and her aides on boxing day reportedly besieged the residence of the victim in search of her grandson, one Nnamdi Odiaka.

Before the incident, Nnamdi, was alleged to have made posts on one of the social media channels against Mrakpor, who had just emerged as the chairmanship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the March 6, 2021 LG election in Delta State.

Mrakpor And 68 year old Grandmother Odiaka

According to this account, following the post he was trailed to his house, but Mrakpor and her team allegedly descended on his grandmother when they could not find the young boy(Nnamdi Odiaka) at home.

This account stated: “She (Mrakpor) came with her aides; unfortunately, they met Nnamdi’s absence and she started slapping the grandmother before the old woman lost consciousness and was rushed to hospital for medical attention.”

The New Diplomat’s checks indicate that shortly after the incident, youths of Ubulu-Uku poured to the streets to protest the alleged  “injustice” meted out to the old woman.

In the tense political atmosphere that followed, another account said, one group opposed to Mrs Mrakpor allegedly capitalized on the situation and mounted protest against Mrakpor.

This account reveals that different inscriptions such as: ‘End Mrakpor’s brutality’ and ‘This is not the first time’, among others donned placards carried by the youths of the area.

The protesters reportedly  barricaded the road to register their supposed grievances against the alleged’ injustice ” meted out against the grandmother by Mrakpor and her aides.

However, Mrs Mrakpor  in her own account to the story as told by the grandmother, Mrs Odiaka, said it is untrue and imprecise. Reacting to the allegation, Mrakpor, who is the wife of the Delta state Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, said the allegation was untrue and described it as the handiwork of her political enemies.

She stated her own side of the story thus: “It is the handiwork of the enemy. You know that my brother just won the chairmanship ticket of the PDP, so the blackmail is politically motivated.

“This picture was taken of her by her children after my supposed merciless beating that made her unconscious. It’s like she regained consciousness or took this picture and went back. God Almighty remains a righteous judge at His own time.

“My political enemies are the one blackmailing us. The police will trace the hospital, where they said the woman is.”

However, her alleged action has continue to trigger outrage as community members seek justice on the matter, asking Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to wade into the development in order to deter Mrakpor from allegedly  using political power to harass innocent citizens and natives of Aniocha South LGA.

But some political analysts who spoke about the raging feud, counter accusations and hot tirades say it all boil down to the struggle for who controls the soul of Aniocha South LGA.

According to them, Mrs Mrakpor has done nothing wrong as it is all about the struggle for political power, and since she has gained an upper hand in the raging battle in Ubulu-Uku, “some other powerful political forces in the area are using this alleged beating of Mrs Odiaka, the 68-year-old randomther as  a weapon to fight back”.

“Is it possible that all the people mentioned in the so-called beating  would go and beat up one person, a grandmother at that? Won’t this grandmother, Mrs Odiaka die?”, the group countered.
