Two years after winning the popular Jollof Faceoff in 2021 to demonstrate her mastery of that famous culinary delight, Nigeria’s Hilda Bachi proved she was no one day wonder by shattering the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous cooking session.
The 27 year old Hilda, a multi talented producer, actor and presenter, had planned to cook for 96 hours non stop in order to beat a previous record of 87 hours 45 minutes set by Indian chef Laya Tondon in 2019. Hilda blew past Tondon’s record by 7:46 a.m. on Monday, 15 May 2023, when she clocked 87 hours and 46 minutes and became the record holder for the longest cook-a-thon, the marathon of cooking.
The Nigerians chef who began cooking from 4 p.m. on Thursday, 11 May, had planned to keep cooking till 4 p.m. on Monday to reach her record goal of 96 hours. But egged on by the massive support of her country and fans all over the world, Hilda Bachi pushed herself for an extra four hours to hit the 100 hour mark.
The Chef had for four days delighted the world with her culinary dexterity and unparalleled dedication by cooking various local and continental dishes to put Nigeria on the culinary map.
The rich and diverse flavors of Nigerian cuisine was on display throughout the marathon cooking session, as she tantalized taste buds with beloved Nigerian dishes such as jollof rice and akara, a savory meal made from mashed beans.
Already know as the Jollof Queen following her earlier victory in that rice competition, her Guinness World Record not only solidifies Baci’s status as a culinary trailblazer but also highlights the significance of Nigerian cuisine on the global stage. By showcasing the artistry and flavors of traditional dishes, she has ignited a newfound appreciation for Nigerian gastronomy.
