The bustling intersection of Nnamdi Azikiwe and Docemo in Idumota, Lagos Island Local Government Area in Lagos state, became a scene of chaos and concern on Wednesday as a fire broke out, engulfing three buildings in its fiery grip.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS) reportedly responded to the emergency call received at 07:41 hours, mobilizing their resources to the site.
In a statement released by Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the blaze consumed two 2-storey structures and one three-storey building.
She said firefighting efforts commenced immediately upon arrival at 07:58 hours, with teams from fire stations at Ebute Elefun, Ilupeju, and Alausa working tirelessly to contain the inferno.
“The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and investigations are ongoing. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported at this time,” stated Adeseye.
As emergency personnel continue to battle the flames, Mrs. Adeseye urged residents to cooperate and steer clear of the area to ensure their safety.
“We urge residents to cooperate with emergency personnel and avoid the area for their safety,” she added.
She noted that the intensity of the fire and its spread present a challenging situation for the firefighters, emphasizing the need for caution and support from the community.
It would be recalled that in January 2024, a devastating fire engulfed the renowned Mandilas building on Broad Street, Lagos Island Local Government Area, resulting in the loss of goods for over 6,700 traders.
The National Emergency Management Agency reported the destruction of 450 shops, 30 offices, two hotels, and five restaurants within the 14-storey building.
