The United Nations, UN has expressed it’s continuous interest in Nigeria’s 2015 General Election with a second visit to the Presidential Candidate of Nigeria’s main opposition party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari.

The UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki Moon who was represented by the Under Secretary General, Mr. Jeffrey Feltman said the purpose of the visit was to get an update on the preparations for the forthcoming election in Nigeria.

The UN has visited various political parties and Nigeria’s electoral commission to create awareness of the need for peaceful and credible elections.General Election

Mr. Feltman said the UN is interested in the election because of Nigeria’s position in the UN and the important role Nigeria plays in the West African region and continent as a whole.

Reacting to the rumour from several quarters of the polity that the election might be postponed again, Mr. Feltman expressed hope in the Federal government to maintain the date already set for the election.

“The Secretary General himself has received assurances from the President, I have received assurances myself on the need for elections to take place as planned for the 28th of March. We certainly have given our messages that we think it is important that the date is respected,” he said.

General Buhari on his part expressed appreciation to the UN for its show of concern in Nigeria.

“We are very appreciative of the support of the United States and Europe in maintaining their interest and advising the government to work within the constitution of the country. That’s all we need, let the election be conducted according to the law,” Buhari said.

He promised that his party would continue to promote peace in politics.
