History was recorded in the politics of Adamawa state as well as Nigeria as Senator Aishatu Binani on Friday clinched the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship ticket in Adamawa State.

Binani polled a total of 430 votes to defeat Nuhu Ribadu, former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and a former governor of Adamawa, Jibrilla Bindow, a House of Representatives member, Abdulrazak Namdas, Wafari Theman, and Umar Mustapha.

The chairman of the Electoral Committee, Gambo Lawan, announced the result. According to him, she scored 430 votes to defeat her closest contestant Ribadu who polled 288 votes.

Binani who is currently a lawmaker representing Adamawa Central in the Senate is the first female governorship aspirant of a major political party in the state.

The feat makes her the second female guber flag bearer of a major party in Nigeria, behind late former Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan who became the APC governorship flag bearer in the Taraba State in 2015. She, however, lost to incumbent Governor Darius Ishaku.

However, she is hoping to become the first elected female governor in Nigeria’s history.

Below is the full list of the votes of the five aspirants;

Aisha Binani: 430

Nuhu Ribadu: 288

Jibrilla Bindo: 103

Abdulrazak Namdas: 94
