Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has come under fire over his claims that Nigerians have been begging him to contest for the 2023 presidential election.

Bello, during an interview with the Channels TV on Friday had stated that he is considering running for the Presidential election in 2023 because Nigerians have been begging him to contest.

According to the Governor, Nigerians believe that he is the right man to fix the numerous challenges facing the country.

In his words, “Nigerians, the youth and women, and all Nigerians, including very objective elites are asking me to run for President in 2023.

“And I believe it is high time that we look into capacity, who can do the job, who is going to unify this country. And I think they are seeing something in me that they are asking me to come and unite and fix this country.

“My answer will be in the affirmative in a few time from now.

“I want to urge each and every one of us that are urging me to come to be patient. It’s a work in progress. And by the grace of God, I am not going to disappoint you when the time comes for me to give a response to that.”

However, the statement of the Governor has been generating barrage of reactions from Nigerians, with many wondering why the Governor made such an exaggerated claim to boost his political prospects, describing it as unsolicited.

Here are some of the reactions harvested from Twitter:

“My name is Adanu Olubo-Ojo Moses. I am from Otutubatu, in Omala LGA of Kogi State. This is to state that I am not part of the Nigerians calling on Governor Yahaya Bello to run for president in 2023. He failed as the Governor of Kogi state and therefore can’t be @NGRPresident,”(@MOadanu).

“My name is Olugbenga Boluwaji Ajayi, this is just to state it clearly that my family is not part of the Nigerians calling on yahaya bello to run for the president of Nigeria in 2023,”(@OBA_ohulgy).

“Nobody is asking you to run for presidency please. Enough of all these talks; no Nigerian will ever vote for you,” (@SA_Emmanuel).

“The first day I read this statement from Bello, I have been wondering about the Nigerians asking him to run for Presidency. I detest people like this. If you want to do something you aspire about, do it and stop acting like you were cajoled to do it,” (@Eziamaka1).

“Yahaya Bello that can not rule Kogi State is here talking about Nigeria. May God never allow another king Pharaoh to rule over us again,”(@danieligili).

Also, the Channels TV took to its official Twitter handle to conduct an online opinion poll on the Governor’s claim. The opinion poll questioned the Nigeria Twitter Community on their stance about supporting Bello for the 2023 Presidency.

Although the tweet has since been deleted by the medium, however, out of the 5,197 people that were able to vote, only 6% supported the Governor’s Presidency ambition with 90% casting their votes against the Governor.
