The House of Representatives’ has reportedly received a proposal to change Nigeria’s name to the United African Republic (UAR).
According to reports, this was proposed by a tax consultant identified to be Adeleye Jokotoye. He was said to have submitted his proposal to the House committee on constitution review.
Recall that the National Assembly has been organising a public hearing on the amendment of the 1999 Constitution.
Jokotoye made his submission at the South West Zonal Public Hearing in Lagos on Wednesday.
The proposal suggested that Nigeria’s name should be changed to United African Republic (UAR) or United Alkebulan Republic.
Presenting his proposal, Jokotoye stated that the current name of the country was imposed by Britain who colonised the Country.
He explained that a change of name is necessary as it will kick-start a new beginning.
“At this crossroads in our history, it is mandatory that we change our name to reflect a new beginning which will be ushered in with a new constitution,” he said.
Explaining why he chose United African Republic, Jokotoye said Nigeria is made up of hundreds of ethnic groups that need to be united.
