Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi on Tuesday expressed optimism on the state recording 100 per cent survival rate on the Coronavirus patients in the state.

He said the patients at the isolation in Lagos are experiencing mild-moderate illness, saying they are not looking like people who are going to die.

Of the 81 people who contracted Coronavirus in Lagos, according to the NCDC, eight people have been discharged so far.

Addressing newsmen in Alausa, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on update of the virus, Abayomi said Lagos was ahead of the outbreak in terms of strategic planning to halt spread of the disease.

He said contrary to the 81 cases recorded for Lagos by the NCDC, only 66 of those cases were actually transmitted in Lagos, while 15 others were discovered in a vessel off the shore of Lagos and brought in.

“So, out of the 66 cases in Lagos State, eight have been discharged and nobody has died. Nobody in our ward looking like they are going to die,” he said.

He added that most patients in the isolation ward were experiencing mild to moderate illness, adding that 33 of the 66 cases in Lagos had mild illness and the other 33 cases had moderate illness.

The commissioner also said Lagos currently had capacity to test for 150 cases per day in the three centres, emphasising that the state was using the Molecular Biological Test, which is 100 percent accurate to conduct test on suspected cases.

Abayomi said the state government would be discharging some patients soonest as they were showing signs of recovery.

He stated that the rate of positivity was still very low in Lagos compared to Europe, stressing that because of government’s proactiveness and aggressiveness, the rate of infection would never be like in Europe.
