Unidentified gunmen numbering at least 100, have attacked the Bende Divisional Police Station late Wednesday in Bende Local Government, Abia State.

Two Police operatives suffered gunshot injuries.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abia State command, SP Godfrey Ogbonna, who confirmed the attack in a press briefing, disclosed that the gunmen destroyed several properties in the police Station and set free some inmates.

He however, failed to disclosed the number of inmates freed.

Ogbonna, however, assured that the police in conjunction with other security agencies had already embarked on full investigations into the incident and other recent attacks in different parts of the state.

His words, “They also burnt two vehicles, including the Divisional Police Officer’s Highlander Jeep, and three motorcycles, parked at the station.

“We do not know yet how they all gathered to execute the attack at the station.

“May be they parked their vehicles away from their target and walked through footpaths to the place,” he said.

Abia State has been witnessing attacks on public facilities recently. In April, some gunmen invaded the Uzuakoli Divisional Police Station in Bende Council.

Similarly, some gunmen on May 9, attacked the Mike Okiro Police Station, along the Umuahia-Uzoakoli Road, in Umuahia North Local Government.

Two vehicles, two motorcycles, stationeries and office equipment inside the police station were burnt but no life was lost.

Also, on May 9, an office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) located in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State was torched by some hoodlums.

INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, who confirmed the incident, disclosed that the building was completely destroyed as well as electoral materials and other office equipments.
