Members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Niger State seem to have been thrown into confusion following the endorsement of the Governor Abubakar Sani-Bello for Senate in the 2023 elections by the State Party Chairman, Alhaji Haliru Jikantoro.
Sani-Bello, whose tenure as a Governor will elapse next year is eyeing the North East Senatorial seat, an ambition which Jikantoro has openly endorsed. The chairman who didn’t pretend about his choice for the seat also declared that the governor is the only candidate he recognises.
“I can confidently beat my chest and go against anyone that wants to stand in Lolo’s way. Ordinarily, I shouldn’t have come out openly to endorse him but I am saying I support Lolo (the Governor) and I asked that the world be informed of my decision. I am not only in support but I am at the forefront,” Jikantoro revealed.
Meanwhile, last week, the incumbent Senator Aliyu Abdullahi Sabi who is seeking a third term was endorsed by 87 wards in eight local governments of the state.
According to them, Sabi has tremendously improved their wellbeing as a senator, adding that he deserves a third term to enable him continue the good works in transforming the lives of the people.
However, the party chairman’s position is tearing the ruling party apart as party faithfuls expect him to give everyone a level playing ground.
Similarly, it was also reported that 378 APC members from wards in Kontagora local government area threw their weight behind the governor, noting that he has delivered dividends of democracy and should represent them.
This development has kept many wondering who will cling the party’s ticket since both contenders are political gladiators but only time will tell.
