Thomas Tuchel has his first win as Chelsea boss, with a performance far more dominant than the scoreline suggests. The Blues were a class apart against the Clarets, who came closest in the dying seconds when James Tarkowski headed over from a corner. But it’s goals for Spaniards Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso that sealed the points.

Azpilicueta and Alonso scored as Thomas Tuchel got a first win as Chelsea head coach with a 2-0 victory over Burnley.

Chelsea captain Azpilicueta struck the first goal of the German’s reign after being set by up Callum Hudson-Odoi five minutes before half-time.

Tuchel’s team dominated throughout and came close to a second goal when Hudson-Odoi hit a post before he teed up substitute Christian Pulisic to drag wide.

Alonso was one of four Chelsea changes and he made sure of the win on on 84 minutes, juggling Pulisic’s pass and volleying beyond Nick Pope.

Burnley had beaten Liverpool and Aston Villa in their previous two matches but they lost Chris Wood to injury and did not muster a single shot on target at Stamford Bridge.

A first win in four home matches lifts Chelsea to seventh, level on points with their next opponents, Tottenham Hotspur. Burnley stay 15th, eight points above the bottom three.

The goal from Cesar Azpilicueta is his first in the Premier League since scoring against Arsenal in January 2020, little over a year ago. And hats off to Callum Hudson-Odoi, who has been directly involved in 5 goals in his last 8 starts in all competitions, scoring 3 and providing 2 assists.

Premier League pundit Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, said of the game:
“Tuchel will now know that he has a squad that are eager to play. In the first half they were ready to impress, to show their best – they over-did it at times, but you can always take some off rather than add some on. I think he’ll be happy with that.”
