The rampaging Covid-19 has struck the inner circle of Ghanaian President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, forcing him to go into a 14-day self-isolation.
On Saturday, one of Akufo-Addo’s close associates tested positive for the novel coronavirus, a statement signed by the Ghanian Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah said.
Akufo-Addo decided to take the precautionary measure in compliance with the Covid-19 protocols.
The statement added that although his initial test on Saturday was negative, the president “has elected to take this measure out of the abundance of caution.”
“During this precautionary period of self-isolation, the president will work from the presidential villa at the Jubilee House,” it said.
Ghana’s total coronavirus cases figure presently stands at 19,388 with 117 deaths so far recorded.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s Deputy Trade Minister, Mr. Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah has resigned after breaching Covid-19 isolation protocol.
Ahenkorah had visited the electoral registration office in capital, Accra without completing his self-isolation period, after he contracted the virus.
The Ghanaian ex-minister had earlier tested positive for Covid-19 and was advised to go into self-isolation, which he admitted to breaching later.
The Minister had reportedly informed authorities that he had been in contact with a former party official and his driver, who both tested positive for the virus later.
Despite his admission at a care facility in Accra, Ahenkorah only self-isolated at home for one week after which he left his house, breaching the protocols and putting other people at risk.
President Akufo-Addo’s office announced that the resignation of the Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry has been accepted, noting it will effect immediately.
