Because of the rising cases of the virus, President Akufo-Addo has extended the lockdown period by another week.

The president said evidence from the ground suggested that the lockdown, which began on March 30, had worked well.

“It is important that we stay the course, and bear with the difficulties that come with it. The final result, hopefully, will be freedom from the virus,” Akufo-Addo said.

The president said the contact tracing and the testing team would test 10,000 additional samples in the subsequent week for a clearer picture to make a decision on the way forward.

To cushion Ghanaians against the economic impact of the lockdown, the president said that for the next three months, the government would absorb the full cost of electricity for lifeline consumers.

Government will also pay 50 percent of the cost for all other consumers.
