Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Friday announced the dissolution of the German parliament, paving way for fresh general elections.

The President also set an early general election for February 23, 2025.

This decision comes in the wake of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz losing a vote of confidence, which led to the collapse of his three-party coalition government.

Steinmeier explained that the move to dissolve the parliament came after consultations with party leaders, stakeholders while emphasizing the need for a stable government to address Germany’s current economic and political challenges.

The New Diplomat reports that the political landscape leading into the election shows the conservative CDU/CSU bloc, led by Friedrich Merz, is leading in polls, with Scholz’s SPD trailing.

The Greens, who are part of Scholz’s current coalition, are also in the race, though polling behind in latest polls and surveys.
