The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, has denied reports claiming he is plotting to usurp Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the upcoming Lagos State gubernatorial election.

The speaker who described the reports as false, gave Sanwo-Olu a vote of confidence, saying the governor deserves another term in office.

Reports had emerged claiming that plans are underway to muscle out Sanwo-Olu and give him the same treatment that kicked out his immediate predecessor, former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode from office.

It was reported that Sanwo-Olu may have to fight the political battle of his life yet to have his name on the ballot once again as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the 2023 gubernatorial polls in Lagos.

Gbajabiamila was said to have been chosen by some chieftain of APC in Lagos as the flagbrearer of the party in the 2023 election.

The speaker, who reacted during an interview session with Channels TV, said that Sanwo-Olu, is doing well and there is no need to stop him from running for second term in office.

In his words: “This Governor is doing a good job under the current circumstances. It’s been a difficult time in his last two years and he has come out well. So, why should anyone upset the apple cart? I think he (Sanwo-Olu) is doing a good job.

“That (question) provokes a smile. No, I don’t have any such plan and I don’t have immediate plan. I have a job I am doing right now; it’s a very tough job. Sometimes, it’s the most difficult job and I say it to people in the world. People don’t understand that, but this is not a forum I’m going to break it down.

“I don’t want distractions. I am working as a Speaker of the House of Representatives with a lot of responsibilities on my shoulder right now. Any other thing would be a distraction. As for Lagos State Governorship? I have not even thought about it. Why? Because, the present Governor is doing a good job.”
