Trump and us, by Hakeem Baba-Ahmed Baba-Ahmed

By Hakeem Baba-Ahmed I admit entertaining some doubt over the authenticity of US President Trump’s first tweet announcing that he had set in motion the process of classifying Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern, again. The bit that confused me was the reference to Nigerian Christians as ‘our Christians’. The world is now familiar…

President Donald Trump’s pronounced intention to make the United States “take over” and “own” Gaza apparently does not sit well with some politicians in the country.

This is as a Democratic lawmaker from Texas in the US House of Representatives, AI Green, said he would be filing impeachment articles against Donald Trump over the president’s plan.

Speaking during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, Trump had said the US will take over the Gaza Strip to “dismantle and develop it”.

“Gaza is a hellhole,” Trump said. Recall that Gaza has been reduced to rubble following the recent escalation of hostilities between Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, and Israel.

According to The Guardian, Green said Trump’s plan was a “dastardly deed”, adding that “ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a joke, especially when it emanates from the President of the United States”.

“And the prime minister of Israel should be ashamed, knowing the history of his people, to stand there and allow such things to be said,” he added.

“Dr King was right. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, and injustice in Gaza is a threat to justice in the United States of America.

“I rise to announce that the movement to impeach the president has begun. I rise to announce that I will bring articles of impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed, and dastardly deeds done.”

Green said the “impeachment movement is going to be a grass-up movement, not a top-down”, and that “when the people demand it, it will be done”.

Recall that Green launched a raft of unsuccessful impeachment attempts against Trump during the president’s first term in office.

His latest effort is unlikely to gain much traction as impeachment is not seen as an immediate agenda for his party.
