• Total Revenue by Nigerian States Surged by 49%

Lagos State has once again clinched the top spot in internally generated revenue (IGR) for 2024, raking in a total of N1.26 trillion, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported.

The agency revealed that Lagos State’s IGR accounts for over one-third of the nation’s total subnational earnings.

Close behind, oil-rich Rivers State clocked N317.30 billion, cementing its position as the nation’s second-highest earner, while the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) followed with N282.36 billion.

According to NBS, total IGR soared to N3.63 trillion in 2024, a 49.70% jump from the N2.43 trillion recorded in 2023.

In the bottom, Yobe State generated the least IGR with N11 billion while Ebonyi State followed closely with N13 billion.

The NBS explained that the IGR is calculated using two broad categories of revenues: Tax Revenue and Ministries, Departments, and Agencies’ (MDAs’) Revenue.

Taxes include PAYE, Direct assessment, Road taxes, Stamp duties, Capital gain tax, withholding taxes, Other taxes, and LGAs’ revenue.

According to the agency, PAYE was the most tax revenue recorded during the period (₦1.86 trillion), representing 69.84 per cent of the total taxes collected, while capital gains tax was the least with ₦10.57 billion.
