There was sudden fuel scarcity on Monday after the first inaugural speech of Nigeria’s 16th President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which hinted at subsidy removal and using the resources to develop other sectors of the economy.

The president has said in that speech at Eagle Square, Abuja, that his administration is phasing out the fuel subsidy regime which has increasingly favoured the rich more than the poor.

According to him, “Subsidy can no longer justify its ever-increasing costs in the wake of drying resources. We shall instead re-channel the funds into better investment in public infrastructure, education, health care and jobs that will materially improve the lives of millions.”

Checks by The New Diplomat revealed that some filling stations in Lagos State and environs were closed while others had long queues.

The development caused traffic gridlock and most of the filling stations selling fuel began selling for between N200 and N250.

It was noticed that most of the fuel stations selling to the public were owned by major marketers, while most of the independent stations were closed and not selling the product.

While reacting to the sudden return of fuel scarcity after the President’s speech, Nigerians took to tweeter to air their opinions;

It’s been less than 12 hrs Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidy, but most filling stations have started increasing prices; Some have stopped selling, & are waiting for scarcity to start so they can make excess profit. We Nigerians are our own problem, we’re too greedy.

On my way back home this evening, I’ve seen long queues in filling stations here in Abuja. Possibly, the fuel price will soon rise. Only God knows what the new price will be. And fuel scarcity will be back these days.

Nigerians are about to go through a rough 2 days of fuel scarcity and the suffering that comes with it. And by the time the scarcity ends, they’d be buying fuel for N500 or above. Frying pan to fire.
