The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has announced its decision to increase tariffs by 15%., triggering massive reactions from Nigerians.

To many who spoke on the matter, this development is most insensitive to the plight of the Nigerian people who have been weighed down by econonic crisis. While some vow to challenge the increase, others urge the NLC to take up the matter immediately.

This is the first notable increment in tariff for a long while

NPA managing director Abubakar Dantsoho made this disclosure on Thursday in Lagos State during a stakeholders’ engagement for the approved 15% NPA tariff increment across the board.

Represented by the Executive Director of Marine and Operations, Olalekan Badmus, Dantsoho asserted that the tariff increment was necessary amidst economic changes, including exchange rate fluctuations, rising wages, fuel and lubricant costs, and inflation.

The New Diplomat reports that the latest development could lead to higher costs for imported products, which might be passed on to consumers, thereby potentially increasing prices for goods within the market.

It also comes after the electricity tariff was increased for Band A customers and the recent increment of telecom tariffs.
