The Federal Government on Wednesday announced a 3-day total shutdown of the 3rd Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
The bridge will be totally closed from midnight on Friday to midnight on Sunday to enable contractors carry out necessary repair works on the busiest road in the country.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr Olukayode Popoola, made this known in a statement on Wednesday.
Popoola who gave reasons for the closure, he said the construction had reached a stage where there should not be any form of movement or vibration on the bridge for concrete casting.
He said, “the first total closure of the section of the bridge between Adekunle and Adeniji Adele will be from midnight of Friday, 9th October 2020 to midnight of Sunday, 11th October 2020 to enable the contractor finish the first stage of casting works”.
The controller noted that traffic officials would be deployed to help traffic flow to all the alternative routes.
Popoola added that the second total closure of the section of the bridge between Adekunle and Adeniji Adele would be communicated to the general public at a later date.
The controller also noted that the section of the bridge between Adekunle and Iyana – Oworo will remain open, and traffic can move from Ebute-Metta/ Adekunle to Iyana – Oworo and vice Versa.
Recall that FG on July 6 had announced that the 3rd Mainland Bridge would be shutdown partially for 6 months due to routine maintenance of the bridge which would commenced on July 24.
An average of 117,000 vehicles a day ply the 11.8km long bridge in a day which makes it the busiest road in Nigeria connecting the mainland to the island of the commercial nerve center of Nigeria, Lagos.
