Popular Nigerian musician, Seun Kuti, has spoken against the plans by the power Distribution Companies (DISCOs) to increase electricity tariffs in the country.
Sharing on Instagram, Kuti said Nigerians should not be fooled by whatever reasons the DISCOs are giving for the tariff increase.
The saxist while condemning the move, summarized the details that led to the privatization of the power sector in Nigeria.
He wrote in part on Instagram:“…Pure nonsense. Little mistake in the video. The Entire infrastructure was valued then at 9bn dollars. Then renovated with 3 billion dollars and sold to these people for less than 3bn dollars. WHO BE FOOL?”
Seun Kuti is the youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. He has spent most of his life preserving and extending his father’s activism and musical legacy as the leader of Egypt 80.
The New Diplomat had reported that the DISCOs agreed to defer the tariff increase to 2021 after the intervention of President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of the National Assembly.
As Nigerians continue to kick over the move, the DISCOs have argued that the tariffs are due for review to make them cost reflective as well as attract more Investments into the power sector.
