As part of a deliberate effort to provide enough higher institutions of learning for the growing population of young school leavers, the Federal Executive Council (FEC), has approved the establishment of 37 new private universities across Nigeria.
Making this known to newsmen shortly after a meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the Minister of Education, Mr Adamu Adamu said the decision followed a memo presented by the Ministry of Education.
The Minister disclosed that with this approval, the total number of private universities in Nigeria, now stands at 72.
Mr. Adamu explained that the approval was given in consideration of the place of education in bolstering the Economic fortunes of the country.
Earlier, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige disclosed that the council also approved the Universal Implementation of the Employee Compensation Act (ECA) .
Dr. Ngige who stated that the law is operated by the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF), disclosed that it was a replacement of the old Employee Compensation Act that was known as the “Workman Compensation.”
He said that the council has approved it for universal implementation, and now apart from the private sector, that’s already implementing it, the public sector, which is government- “federal, state and local governments will now have to adopt this for the protection of their workers”.
