Several wellwishers and fans of a veteran Nollywood actor, Amaechi Muonagor, have taken to their social media accounts to mourn his demise.
The veteran actor succumbed to the cold hands of death on Sunday at the age of 61 years. He passed away after a protracted battle with kidney disease.
Muonagor was said to have died after a long battle with kidney failure. In November 2023, the ace actor revealed that the left side of his body had been “paralyzed for several months”.
The actor’s condition deteriorated, requiring weekly dialysis and physiotherapy at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) in Nnewi, Anambra.
Muonagor was born on August 20, 1962. He was a native of Idemili, in Anambra state. He got married and gave birth to four children.
After his youth service in 1989, Amaechi started working for the News Agency of Nigeria. A few years later, he left his job to play the role of Akunatakasi in ‘Taboo 1’, his first movie.
The New Diplomat reports that Muonagor’s demise came a few weeks after the death of John Okafor popularly known as Mr Ibu and ace Tolani Quadri Oyebamiji, popularly known as Sisi Quadri.
Meanwhile, a social commentator, Morris Monye, via his X handle, @Morris_Monye, while mourning the actor, said help was raised to assist the deceased as he battled with health issues.
Muonagor was said to have suffered kidney failure and was on dialysis.
The news of his demise came a few days after a viral video where the actor solicited funds to help him have a Kidney transplant.
Monye wrote: “Deeply heartbroken by the news of Amaechi Muonagor’s passing. He was a talented Nollywood actor whose presence on our screens was truly masterful.
“We watched with concern as he battled health issues, offering whatever support we could to help him seek treatment in India. This tragic loss highlights the need for better healthcare in our country.”
An X user, @Oluomoofderby, while mourning the actor, wrote: “May his soul rest in peace. The healthcare systems in Western and Asian countries that are being patronized by Nigerian leaders only exist because they were developed. They are consistently maintained, through political commitment and visionary leadership, qualities that are lacking in Nigeria. Maybe you like it or not, the poor healthcare system in our country is going to affect every one of us. We all need to wake up and demand a better healthcare system in Nigeria.”
Another user, @alesolas wrote: “May his soul rest in perfect peace. Aside from the name Nigeria, nothing is working in the country.”
@mister_ade5 tweeted: “We’ve lost a Nollywood Legend. RIP Legend Amaechi Muonagor.”
“From Mr Ibu to Amaechi Muonagor. In less than a month, we lost both of them,” @Oladapomikky1 posted.
