Nigeria’s Oil Wealth and the Rentier Paradox: From Oloibiri to the Present

By Sonny Iroche When crude oil first spurted at Oloibiri in 1956, it was hailed as the dawn of prosperity. In fiscal terms, it was: across successive military and civilian administrations, Nigeria earned hundreds of billions of dollars from petroleum exports. Yet the country’s physical and social infrastructure, roads, schools, hospitals, water systems, power supply,…

By Farooq A. Kperogi I was initially disinclined to write about the alleged attempted coup to dislodge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from power because the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has publicly denied it and characterized news reports suggesting that it did happen as “false and misleading.” News of the coup attempt was first exclusively reported by…

The family, friends, and well-wishers of former deputy Senate president Ike Ekweremadu organized a lavish birthday celebration as he turned 62.

A former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Olisa Metuh, posted pictures of the party on his social media accounts.

Despite Ekweremadu’s absence, Metuh and other friends celebrated the occasion alongside Ekweremadu’s daughters and other family members.

Metuh wrote: “Today, I joined the Ekweremadu daughters and some family members to celebrate the 62nd birthday of my friend and brother for life. Indeed, I am so proud of the girls, especially Sonia, who has shown remarkable strength and resilience in these trying and most difficult times.

“We cut a birthday cake in his honour and enjoyed a sumptuous lunch in celebration. May the Almighty God give him peace and good health as we pray for a grand reunion in Jesus’ name.”

The New Diplomat recalls that in March 2023 Ekweremadu, and his wife, Beatrice, were found guilty of organ trafficking in the United Kingdom.

The duo, along with a medical doctor, Dr Obinna Obeta, were found guilty of facilitating the travel of a young man to Britain with a view to his exploitation after a six-week trial at the Old Bailey.

In May 2023, a UK court sentenced Ekweremadu to a total of nine years and eight months imprisonment, while his wife, Beatrice, was sentenced to four years and six months imprisonment for plotting to harvest a man’s kidney.
